Why study this course?

Course Overview

Mathematics is an exciting, rewarding, challenging and versatile subject which not only complements but is fundamental to studies in many areas including the sciences, finance, economics and engineering. Research has shown that a degree in mathematics opens the doors to an enviable choice of careers and gives graduates a highly increased earning capacity.

What will I study?

You will study pure mathematics including: proof, algebra and functions, coordinate geometry, sequences and series, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, calculus, numerical methods, vectors. You will also examine statistics including: statistical sampling, data presentation and interpretation, probability, statistical distributions, statistical hypothesis testing. In addition, you will study Mechanics including: kinematics, forces and Newton’s laws, moments.

How is this course assessed?

Three, equally weighted, 2 hour exams at the end of Year 13. Two will be on pure mathematics and one covering statistics and mechanics.

What can I study with this course?

Many of our students choose it to support their other subject choices, although it combines well with any other subject. We strongly recommend mathematics if you are planning to take physics, chemistry or computer science.

It will provide you with excellent preparation for a wide range of mathematics, science, business and related degree courses. Mathematics graduates have one of the highest rates of employment and are employed in careers in a very wide range of industries.

Specific entry requirements for this course

Grade 6 in maths.

A-Level entry requirements

At least four 5s at GCSE.
Your English and maths GCSEs must be at least grade 4.

BTEC entry requirements

At least five 4s at GCSE. A grade 4 in math, English language, or literature, and a grade 3 in the other subjects is required.
