This page outlines the eligibility criteria and application process for the Sixth Form Bursary Scheme, including both the Government Discretionary Bursary and the Vulnerable Groups Bursary. The scheme is designed to provide financial support to students in need, ensuring they can continue their education at D6.

D6 Bursary for Students Aged 16-19

Types of bursaries

This bursary is available for students who are in one of the defined vulnerable groups. Students eligible for this bursary can receive up to £1,200 per year. The vulnerable groups include:

  • Young people in care
  • Care leavers
  • Young people receiving Income Support, or Universal Credit in their own right
  • Young people receiving both Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or Universal Credit in their own right

The discretionary bursary is aimed at students who are facing financial hardship but do not qualify for the vulnerable groups bursary. The discretionary bursary can be used to help with the cost of transport, books, meals, trips, specific clothing and anything related to your course. The eligibility criteria and required documentation for the discretionary bursary are detailed below.

Eligibility criteria

To qualify for the discretionary bursary, a student must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Household Income: A joint household income of below £25,000.
  • Free School Meals: Currently entitled to Free School Meals.
  • Means-Tested Benefits: A young person whose parents are currently claiming other means-tested benefits including Universal Credit and Income-Based Employment Support Allowance (ESA), who is not entitled to Free School Meals.
  • Financial Hardship: At the discretion of the Sixth Form Team, any young person who does not fall into the above categories but considers themselves to be under financial hardship.
  • Young Carers: Young people who are young carers and are not in receipt of Carer’s Allowance.

Required documentation

To apply for the discretionary bursary, students must submit the following documentation:

  • Universal Credit Letter: A Universal Credit letter which is less than 6 months old.
  • Tax Credit Award Notice: All pages of the most recent Tax Credit award notice for the current tax year (2022-2023).
  • ESA Letter: An ESA letter which is less than 6 months old.
  • Pension/Benefit Award Letter: A pension/benefit award letter which is less than 6 months old.
  • Self-Employment Accounts/Tax Return: Self-employment audited accounts or an official tax return.

Application process

Application Form: Students must complete the bursary application form, which is available on this link or from the Sixth Form office.

Supporting Documentation: Attach all required documentation as specified in the eligibility criteria.

Submission: Submit the completed application form and supporting documents to the Sixth Form Team by the specified deadline.

Review: The Sixth Form Team will review all applications and make decisions based on the provided evidence and the level of financial need.

Notification: Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application within four weeks of submission.

D6 Bursary for Students Aged 16-19

Application process

1. Application form

3. Submission

Submit the completed application form and supporting documents to the Sixth Form Team by the specified deadline.

4. Review

The Sixth Form Team will review all applications and make decisions based on the provided evidence and the level of financial need.

5. Notification

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application within four weeks of submission.

Appeals and conditions

Appeals process

If a student believes their application has been unfairly assessed, they may appeal the decision. The appeals process is as follows:

Written Appeal: Submit a written appeal to the Sixth Form Team, detailing the reasons for the appeal and any additional information that may support their case.

Review Panel: The appeal will be reviewed by a panel consisting of senior members of the Sixth Form Team.

Outcome: The student will be informed of the outcome of the appeal within two weeks of submission.

Conditions of the bursary

Students who receive a bursary must adhere to the following conditions:

Bursary will be paid on a termly basis and young people MUST meet the following conditions:

  • Have attendance of 95% or above and have excellent punctuality
  • Not take any term-time holidays
  • Not had an absence for reasons deemed unacceptable such as:
  • Birthday or similar celebrations
  • Shopping
  • Driving lessons (Driving Tests are allowed)
  • Part-time or full-time work
  • Hair or nail appointments
  • Maintain satisfactory attendance and punctuality.
  • Abide by the Sixth Form's code of conduct and policies.

Failure to meet these conditions may result in the reduction or withdrawal of the bursary.
