Course Overview

Further mathematics is an excellent choice if you want to study an academically rigorous qualification and stretch and challenge yourself significantly beyond standard A level mathematics. It is also recommended for students who wish to study a mathematically rich degree course like mathematics, engineering, science, computing or economics.

What will I study?

Core pure mathematics including: proof, complex numbers, matrices, further algebra and functions, further calculus, further vectors, polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions, differential equations. You will also study two options from further pure mathematics, further mechanics, further statistics or decision mathematics. Decision mathematics focuses on solving real life problems using a variety of algorithms.

How is this course assessed?

Four 90 minute exams at the end of Year 13. Two are core pure mathematics papers and two are applied maths papers.

What can I study with this course?

Many students choose further mathematics (with mathematics) alongside physics, chemistry or computer science. However, as a rigorous A level qualification, it complements all other subjects.
